Parents of children enrolled in the Rankin County School District most likely will get a permission form in the mail at the start of the academic year asking whether they want their children taught sex education. That district's school board voted April 11 to adopt the abstinence-only policy and seventh- and eighth-graders will be taught that. The permission slip will be included with other usual forms, like media releases, said Heather Burch, director of curriculum and instruction. It goes to the heart of a key question regarding a law that will require all Mississippi school districts to decide by the end of June whether they'll implement an "abstinence-only" or "abstinence-plus" sex education curriculum. Under the law, schools must give parents no less than one week's notice that a sex education program will be presented in the classroom or during an assembly. Parents must then opt in.

Lawrence schools Supt. Randy Weseman on Friday criticized the Kansas State Board of Education for being out of touch and unresponsive to local school districts. He said board members had received calls from a lot of people who believed the sex education issue was a problem.

George Faught, the author of House Bill , said it would have ensured parents would knew in advance their children would be taught sex education and would give them more control over when their children are exposed to the subject. Current law requires superintendents to inform parents in writing when their students will be taught sex education. Parents not wanting their child to be taught sex education return a form stating they want their child exempted. But under the present system, if students forget to bring the notice home or lose it, students are taught sex education because the school has no notice that parents do not want their children to receive the instruction.
